On April 10, 2014, the Morgentaler Clinic in Fredericton announced it was closing its doors in July for financial reasons. It was a devastating blow for New Brunswick women and transgender people, many of whom will no longer be able to access abortion services except those with the means to travel outside the province and pay for the procedure themselves. At a total cost of at least $1000, this is beyond the reach of too many women.
The government of New Brunswick is 100% to blame for the clinic's closure. Until Jan 1, 2015, it enforced an unconstitutional payment regulation that forced patients to get permision from two doctors to get a funded hospital abortion. But it still enforces another illegal regulation that prohibits funding of medically required care in clinics.
